Slipping Into Darkness
PRICE: Negotiable
GENRE: Supernatural/Thriller
LOGLINE: A woman trapped in an ancient crypt, must confront a tormented soul to find the whereabouts of his final victim.
SYNOPSIS:
Nicole, a woman whose life is shaped by a spiritual trauma passed down to her at birth. She sees things that others don't. In 1984, her teenage mother, Rita, dies tragically in childbirth, haunted by the church's warnings of a fiery hell. From an early age, Nicole has terrifying visions of a "place with fire." Standing at the top of the stairs, she confesses, "I hate coming down here." As she approaches the closet door, rests her hand on the handle while leaning her ear against the wood, a LOW RESONANT HUM begins. "I know there's no devils in here, don't I?" Now completely alone after her grandmother Edith's death, Nicole's home is broken into by a drug dealer named Jag. He places a powerful hallucinogen into her sugar cubes, a date rape drug. Inspector Michaels is baffled by the investigation, questioning why Jag didn't steal anything from the house.
The drug, combined with Nicole's fragile psychological state, triggers a series of vivid visions. In one such vision, she is in Japan's infamous Aokigahara Forest, a place where people go to commit suicide. She encounters a tormented Japanese man from World War II who is about to take his own life. Nicole's unique spiritual connection allows her to help him, leading him out of the forest and restoring his peace.
Nicole's visions escalate as she begins to experience a dark realm, where she is confronted by a tormented soul of a long-dead priest to find his daughter. Nicole is convinced that the lost daughter of the soul is in New Orleans. While there, Hurricane Katrina develops, and she ultimately seeks refuge in an 18th-century mausoleum, where she becomes trapped. In another vision, she confronts the tormented soul, tells him that it wasn't his daughter but rather a 5-year-old girl that he had kidnapped, who died in the canal with him 50-years ago. The soul cannot accept this.
A figure in white, Raphael, rescues Nicole from the collapsing crypt. Later, Michaels brings her back home. She begins to recover and attempts to return to a sense of normalcy. While recuperating she continues her studies in architecture. She goes to the college library basement for a quiet study area, just as an earthquake strikes, trapping her inside. Through this great trauma, Nicole takes a final descent into hell, where she confronts the tormented soul, "You child murderer, where is the third little girl that you kidnapped?" The tormented soul refuses to tell her, but she discovers a journal containing a DIAGRAM that indicates where the little girl is.
Inspector Michaels recognizes the location depicted in the DIAGRAM and uses it to uncover the shallow grave of the 5-year-old girl.
Everyone believes that the visions were merely just hallucinations. However, when Michaels' instinct kicks in, he sends the DIAGRAM to the FBI for analysis of the paper and ink. While Michaels is occupied elsewhere, his partner, Inspector Flossi, notices a manila envelope returned from the FBI. A LOW RESONANT HUM begins as she opens the envelope. A key document, the FBI report, reveals that the paper and ink of the DIAGRAM are at least 50 years old.
